I stumbled across this really interesting tool on how different ages and sexes use social media. While this isn’t a true scientific poll it does give a little insight into how different age ranges are using e-mail, facebook, and twitter.

The information was gathered by exacttarget.com, you can find out their methodology here. For those that are looking to target specific demographics, taking a look at this tool would be a good start to seeing how effecting online marketing strategies may be. Go ahead and click around a bit on the graph to see different responses and more information.

The full study broke down social media users in to 12 basic categories which you can see represented on the graph.

One thing that surprised me was the over 65+ crowd, they were more active in online activities, shopping, searching forums than I would have guessed. There is certainly a lot of valuable information that you can extract from this tool.
