Description

Newborns who are premature, small for gestational age (SGA), or of low birth weight need close monitoring and additional nursing interventions to prevent cold stress. For these reasons, Heat Balance was developed to simulate the heat balance of infants in an incubator, and shows the influences of the different types of heat loss and gain.

This application models the heat balance of a neonate in an infant incubator by example of Dräger Caleo, Isolette C2000 and Isolette 8000. It visualizes the influence of incubator temperature and humidity on the different types of energy transfer between the neonate and the incubator.

• Users adjust settings within the app to see how it would affect infants
• Set patient parameters such as birth weight, age, and gestational age
• Set outside influencers and accessories such as diapers, sweaters, blankets, and hats
• Set language in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, or Portuguese

Accella’s Role in Development

This application was originally built as a desktop Windows application. Accella worked with Dräger throughout the entire design and development process to migrate the app to the iOS platform. Some of the challenges that needed to be overcome included fitting a large amount of information on a small amount of real estate available on the iPhone as well as incorporating intense algorithms to properly predict the impact environmental changes and machine settings would have on a newborn.

What Dräger and Accella were able to develop was an enterprise App that is now used in over 160 countries around the world.
