The Runner’s World SmartCoach application is a smartphone app based off of their popular web application by the same name. The app combines science, mathematics, and 40 years of collective running wisdom to provide runners with a custom tailored, individualized training program designed to genereate training plans for races from a 5K to a marathon.

Accella’s Role in Development

Accella worked very closely with Rodale, the publishers of Runner’s World magazine to migrate their existing web application, SmartCoach to the iPhone and Android platform. They initially developed the app for the iPhone; once that phase of development was finished, they moved on to development for the Android operating system.

Accella helped with the entire development process, including developing a scope of work, creating wireframes, designing the look and feel of the application, coding & testing, as well as helping Rodale launch the application.

As the application already existed as a web application, a lot of the functionality already existed, so we were able to use existing algorithms and functionality throughout the development process. The main challenges were formatting the application and making sure that it would work on the iPhone platform.
